How we plan to make the “TREE”

Tree of Life and Community

Our plan for the actual art installation is to use various textiles and fibres to develop a Tree of Life and Community. We propose that this 12’ tree hangs near the front entrance desk of Village Square Leisure Centre. The drown of the tree will have leaves, branches, and flowers, all made from various dyed, stamped, sewn, and decorated fabric. It will be very textural and three dimensional. The Trunk of the tree will incorporate elements of quilting, fabric piecing, fabric wrapping, and weaving. At the foot of the tree there will be a village of houses of all different colours, shapes, and sizes. These houses will have been made by community members and represent a “community.” We will incorporate birds, butterfly’s, and other animals in the design. We aim to bring as many people together in the making of the different elements of this Tree as possible.

Online

On my site we will host images, poems, writings, thoughts, and reflections from the community engagement sessions. We will piece these together in an interesting display and “digital quilt” for people to visit and appreciate the conversations that went into this piece. The digital accompaniment will be an open conversation and an ongoing interaction that folks can add to and build upon.
